BAF Site and Plot competition
Traditionally we have run competitions for the best allotment site and best individual plot in the borough of Barnet. For the site competition, there have been several categories, related to the size of sites. For the plot competition, societies have been asked to nominate one plot per site.
In 2020, because of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, it was not possible to hold the competitions in the traditional way. In their place, we ran a plot competition based on photographs of plots submitted by societies. Please check out the results of the plot competition and details of the winners, including photos of the winning plots, which can be found in the events archive.
Ted Green Memorial Award
Alongside the competitions we sought nominations for the Ted Green Memorial Award, which is for an outstanding community initiative by an allotment society during the previous twelve months. It is named after Ted Green who was for many the secretary of the Federation. Unfortunately, the Covid restrictions in 2020 prevented any nominations. Previous years’ awards can be found in the events archive.
BAF Horticultural Show
The Federation’s first horticultural show took place in August 2014, and was so successful that it was made into an annual event. It is a successor to the horticultural element of the Friern Barnet summer show which was discontinued in 2012. Federation allotment holders and their immediate families may enter produce in one or more of over 150 different classes; including vegetables, fruit, cut flowers, potted plants and homemade produce.
The show is held on a Sunday, with time for setting up and staging on the previous day. The judging takes place on the Sunday morning, following which the show is open for viewing, the prizes are awarded and the day ends with an auction of the produce exhibited. Both Barnet allotment holders and the general public are welcome to the viewing.
Any queries about the show should be addressed to the competition secretary, Isobel Exell, at email@example.com.
Previous years’ results can be found in the events archive.
