Suppliers of goods and services

This is a list of suppliers of goods and services that have been brought to our attention by allotment societies. It is not intended to be comprehensive and inclusion does not imply that they are recommended by the Federation. It was last revised in October 2018.

If a supplier falls into more than one category, it has been put in the principal category to which it belongs.

The categories are:

While contact details for suppliers, such as names of people, telephone numbers and email addresses are given here, it is possible that some might have changed. You can usually check them by going to the websites. If you find that any of them has changed, or if a society wishes to suggest a supplier to be added to the list, full details should be sent to

Arboricultural Wood Chip

There are many local arboricultural contractors operating throughout the borough. If they cannot dispose of the woodchip from the tree trash on their work site, it becomes a waste product which costs them money to dispose of legally. Most of them are eager to supply allotments at no cost with a heap which is topped up whenever they are working in your area. These contractors include

Green Waste Compost

Now that North London Waste is no longer delivering compost to allotments in Barnet, an alternatve source is Greenmantle in Hendon.  Their black stuff is an entirely green waste compost made from the garden prunings produced by the 30 teams who go out doing garden maintenance each day. This is normally left in a loose pile for 3 months, then shredded to a separate pile for 3 months and finally screened to a fine compost and left for another 3 months to break down.

Greenmantle do not charge for this compost, but they need to cover transport costs.  If a society has room on site for a large quantity, it will probably be worth hiring a grab lorry for half a day to deliver it. Smaller quantities are also possible.

In the first instance, please email John Plummer on and take it from there.

Horse Manure

Jay Wilding from Chelmsford has been in touch offering horse manure. He says that it is well rotted 100% horse manure with no bedding mixed in, collected from the fields and put through a macerator. All bags cost £1 each. He is based in Chelmsford in Essex and can deliver up to 40 miles with large orders up to 100 bags.

Galvanised Water Tanks

The traditional 600 x 600 x 750mm (2’ x 2’ x 2’6”) galvanised steel water tank used on many allotment sites is no longer made – except to special order at silly prices. Modern plastic water tanks are not designed for exposure out of doors and do not last very well. However one supplier of galvanised animal troughs persuaded a manufacturer to make two ‘allotment’ tanks as part of a large order for other products. If you need such tanks for your site, the supplier contact to try is:

R G H Supplies Ltd, Pallinghurst Farm, Guildford Road, Rudgwick, Horsham, West Sussex, RH12 3BQ.

01403 822744,,

The three UK manufacturers of galvanised water tanks are:

L M Bateman & Co Ltd 01538 361326

Scaffold Boards

Old scaffold boards are universally useful on allotment sites. Many suppliers advertise on ebay. One society has obtained them from Scrap Boards Direct, TRAD House Imperial Street, Bromley-by-Bow, E3 3ED, 02087095441, They do not have a website, but you can find them on ebay. In common with most such firms, they do not deliver so you will have to collect.

Railway Sleepers

Wooden railway sleepers come in various sizes, timbers and qualities, both new and used. Typically they cost £20-30 each. Softwood timbers are traditionally treated with creosote and should not be used adjacent to food, children, bare skin or clothing. Untreated hardwood such as oak are available but greatest durability is likely from untreated Australian jarrah hardwood. Inspect the sleepers before ordering to make sure the quality is what you want. If ordering small quantities the delivery cost can be prohibitive but if you aren’t in a hurry the following supplier will deliver your sleepers for a modest price when delivering elsewhere in North London.

Matt Woodfield, St Albans Stone, Albert Bygraves Centre, A414 North Orbital Road, St Albans, AL2 1DL

01727 824461,,

Railway sleepers need very long screws to connect them. The standard solution is heavy duty timber screws imported by Carpenters Mate. See the website at for local distributors.
