22.08.15 Horticultural Show

This was the second horticultural show Barnet Allotment Federation had organised following the end of the Friern Barnet Show a couple of years ago. It was held in the Pavilion at Rathbone allotments on Saturday 22nd August.

The day was sunny and warm. Volunteers and members of Rathbone allotments were busy the day before setting up the tables, registering exhibitors and recording entries while plot holders carefully laid out their prized fruit flowers and vegetables ready for judging the next day. Brook Farm Allotments put on a splendid display of produce and photographs in the entrance to welcome visitors.

At 11 o’clock sharp the hall was closed for judging. Mr Nicholas Angelo of Middlesex Federation of Horticultural Judges, assessed the fruit, flowers and vegetables while Mrs Elizabeth Newton judged the jams, chutneys cakes and pastries in the domestic division.

As soon as the show was opened to the public, visitors thronged in. Exhibitors and their friends and families milled round the tables eager to see the results of the competition.

After all the marks had been calculated and prize winners nominated, Hushang Balyuzi, chairman of the allotment federation presented the cups and certificates to the lucky prize winners.

The afternoon concluded with an auction of donated produce conducted by Cherstyn Hurley and her daughter Yves.

When all the calculations were complete we had made £86.75 in profit.

I would like to thanks the many volunteers who always work with such enthusiasm and commitment to make the show an enjoyable and successful event. It could not happen without you all.
